Desert Rhino Camp

A mfs+Drew joint venture project.

At Desert Rhino Camp in Namibia, our architectural work was a direct response to the powerful and demanding desert landscape. As architects for the redevelopment, our joint venture, Migs + Drew, collaborated with Wilderness Destinations to create a sanctuary that is both a luxury retreat and a testament to conservation. The design was heavily influenced by the camp's core mission to protect the endangered black rhino, using a "light footprint" approach to minimize environmental impact.

The architectural form and material palette—featuring stone, timber, and canvas—were chosen to harmonize with the surroundings, reflecting the copper-colored earth and red rocks of Damaraland. The use of lightweight, elevated timber frames and movable materials allows the camp to feel deeply connected to the ground without a heavy, permanent presence. A defining feature is the use of large, sweeping stretch-fabric roofs that provide crucial protection from the harsh sun while maintaining expansive, uninterrupted views of the desert horizon. This blend of sustainable, low-impact construction with a focus on seamless integration into the breathtaking landscape defines the camp's unique character and its commitment to both comfort and conservation.
